Shaping American Histories, Dreaming American Futures

June 18 - July 27, 2025

As the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence approaches, we invite community reflection on the nation’s past, present, and future to shape our upcoming invitational exhibition, opening summer 2026.

The works of art on view in this gallery represent various histories of America that coexist in textbooks, popular culture, and the minds of all who call this country home. By looking closely at these objects that explore the “American Dream,” define American values, or visualize American heroes, we can begin to understand which stories, symbols, texts, and sources are important to each of us as we collectively dream our own American futures.

After spending time with the works of art, please contribute your thoughts and reflections to the three questions on the response wall. Come back next summer to view the special exhibition celebrating the national anniversary and see how the community’s response shaped the ideas.

We want your input! When you visit the installation, use the pencils and sticky notes provided in the gallery to contribute your thoughts and reflections to each of the three questions below.

Reflect on the nation’s past. What story of America would you like to tell? Consider what part of America’s history is important to you.

Consider our present moment. What actions should we take now to build a more perfect union?

Look ahead to the future. What is your hope for America in the future?
